King Lear by William Shakespeare
Act 3 - Scene 3
Gloucester’s Castle.
Earl of Glouchester : Alack, alack, Edmund, I like not this unnatural dealing! When
[p]I
desir'd their leave that I might pity him, they took from me
[p]the
use of mine own house, charg'd me on pain of perpetual
[p]displeasure
neither to speak of him, entreat for him, nor any
[p]way sustain him.
Edmund : Most savage and unnatural!
Earl of Glouchester : Go to; say you nothing. There is division betwixt the Dukes,
[p]and a
worse matter than that. I have received a letter this
[p]night- 'tis
dangerous to be spoken- I have lock'd the letter in
[p]my closet.
These injuries the King now bears will be revenged
[p]home; there's
part of a power already footed; we must incline to
[p]the King. I will
seek him and privily relieve him. Go you and
[p]maintain talk with the
Duke, that my charity be not of him
[p]perceived. If he ask for me, I
am ill and gone to bed. Though I
[p]die for't, as no less is
threat'ned me, the King my old master
[p]must be relieved. There is
some strange thing toward, Edmund.
[p]Pray you be careful.
Exit.
Edmund : This courtesy, forbid thee, shall the Duke
[p]Instantly know, and of
that letter too.
[p]This seems a fair deserving, and must draw
me
[p]That which my father loses- no less than all.
[p]The younger
rises when the old doth fall. Exit.
