Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare
Act 2 - Scene 3
The same. A room in SHYLOCK’S house.
Jessica : I am sorry thou wilt leave my father so:
[p]Our house is hell, and
thou, a merry devil,
[p]Didst rob it of some taste of
tediousness.
[p]But fare thee well, there is a ducat for thee:
[p]And,
Launcelot, soon at supper shalt thou see
[p]Lorenzo, who is thy new
master's guest:
[p]Give him this letter; do it secretly;
[p]And so
farewell: I would not have my father
[p]See me in talk with thee.
Launcelot Gobbo : Adieu! tears exhibit my tongue. Most beautiful
[p]pagan, most sweet
Jew! if a Christian did not play
[p]the knave and get thee, I am much
deceived. But,
[p]adieu: these foolish drops do something drown
my
[p]manly spirit: adieu.
Jessica : Farewell, good Launcelot.
[p][Exit Launcelot]
[p]Alack, what heinous
sin is it in me
[p]To be ashamed to be my father's child!
[p]But
though I am a daughter to his blood,
[p]I am not to his manners. O
Lorenzo,
[p]If thou keep promise, I shall end this strife,
[p]Become a
Christian and thy loving wife.
